Tenant Handbook for Non-domestic Property

Emergency lighting

Emergency Lighting is backup lighting which will provide a degree of illumination when all or part of the normal lighting in a property fails. It includes emergency escape lighting, and standby lighting.

In the UK fire safety legislation requires that emergency lighting is provided in

  • offices and shops
  • care facilities
  • community halls
  • pubs, clubs and restaurants
  • schools
  • tents and marquees
  • hotels and hostels
  • factories and warehouses
  • common areas in houses with multiple occupants

You must have emergency lighting installed and be able to prove it meets legal standards. As there are several different regulations that apply to emergency lighting, we recommend getting professional advice to ensure compliance.
