Ionising Radiation

Ionising radiation can come from man-made sources (eg medical procedures, radioactive waste) or from the surrounding environment. In all cases, the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17) apply.

Medical equipment

In addition to the IRR17, the use of ioninsing radiation in a medical context (eg x-rays) is governed by the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017 (IR(ME)R)

Radon

Radon is a radioactive gas emitted by rocks and soil. Tenants should assess radon levels in their property and, where identified as a hazard, take appropriate action to restrict exposure. The action required will depend on a variety of factors.

Where radon is not identified as a hazard, retesting should be carried out every 10 years. Further information and resources are available at UK Radon.

Additional legislation may apply to other forms or sources of ionising radiation, or to the disposal of source materials. The Health and Safety Executive website provides further guidance and advice on the use, management, and disposal of radioactive and ionising substances.
