In some cases we can advise you before you make a planning application in line with the Edinburgh Planning Concordat. There is a charge for pre-application advice.
Before requesting pre-application advice read our customer service guide. The guide sets out the level of service you will receive and the charges.
Contact the planning helpdesk for general planning enquiries.
What we advise on
We don't usually provide bespoke pre-application advice on
- householder developments
- advertising and signage
- simple changes of use / alterations.
Advice on proposals of this nature can be accessed in the planning quick guides.
In exceptional cases, for example complex or sensitive developments, we may be able to provide advice. This is on a case-by-case basis at team managers’ discretion. Contact us to discuss this.
Advice on non-material variations does not fall within the scope of the service. Contact the relevant case officer for advice on non-material variations.
The pre-application service will resume on Monday 4 May 2020 so that we can support communities and businesses across Edinburgh through this difficult time. The service has been re-adjusted as officers continue to work from home. Meetings will be via Skype or Microsoft Teams. Requests for advice should be sent to [email protected] using the request form.
Please note that enquiries will be assessed and if we think the advice cannot be progressed because a site visit is required, we will decline the request. This will usually apply to cases involving listed buildings. It is therefore important that sufficient information is submitted to allow us to make that assessment.
Paying for advice
As we are unable to take telephone payments whilst officers are working from home, payment for the pre-application service can, at present, only be made by BACS. Details can be found in our Customer Service Guide on how to pay be BACS.
