Defer entry to P1

The school year begins in mid-August. A single school year group consists of children born between the beginning of March in one year and the end of February the following year.

Children usually start school between the ages of 4.5 and 5.5 years old. Children who defer entry to school tend to start school at 5.5 and 6 years old.

Find out how to apply for deferred entry to P1 below.

If your child is born in January and February 2016 your request for deferred entry will automatically approved once we’ve processed the paperwork. You are eligible for a further year of funded early learning and childcare.

If your child is born between 15 August and 31 December 2015 we will consider your request for deferred entry. You are not automatically entitled to extra funding.

Before you apply

Contact your nursery to discuss deferring your child’s entry to school. We also recommend that you contact your catchment school and arrange to visit P1.

Contact your nursery to request deferred entry to P1. The nursery will explain the process and have the paperwork. You must complete the paperwork with the nursery staff, who must counter sign it.

Deadline for requests is 31 March 2020. You must apply with your nursery well in advance of this so we receive your application on time.
