Gilmerton, Gracemount & Liberton

Edinburgh’s south east neighbourhoods have experienced a lot of growth in recent years, with an expanding population placing a higher demand on existing services.

We want people living here to have easy access to quality services that meet their needs, both now and in future.

We’re looking at how we can improve these local areas so everyone feels safe, with better access to day-to-day services, greenspaces and places for recreation and socialising.

You can find more detailed information on some of the key projects taking place in these neighbourhoods below.

Information on additional projects in other south east neighbourhoods will be added in future.

Projects across the local area

Restore The Burn

We are working with the Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust and SEPA on an ambitious project to regenerate the Burn that runs through Burdiehouse, Niddrie, Brunstane and other neighbourhoods across south east Edinburgh.

The Restore the Burn project is creating an enhanced blue and green corridor through the area while revitalising surrounding habitats. This work is

  • boosting biodiversity along the corridor, bringing nature into the city,
  • enhancing the climate adaptation and resilience of the burn, helping to protect the local area from the impacts of flooding,
  • providing valuable public spaces for work, relaxation, recreation, education, and play alongside the river and into connecting areas,
  • improving public access to the burn and creating better active travel routes,
  • and creating education and engagement opportunities for the local community.

Detailed plans are currently being developed, with construction due to start towards the end of 2026.

You can read more about the project on the Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust website.
