Local projects
Liberton has a growing community with housing constructed over a relatively wide area, without a traditional town centre.
We're developing a community-centred approach towards regenerating the area, supporting opportunities for generations to come together through friendly activities that tackle loneliness, social isolation and health inequalities.
We want to connect the community by increasing opportunities for individuals and families to experience new work and lifelong learning in the local area. Across Liberton, affordable mixed-use development is creating new housing, and we want to support this with local services, amenities and opportunities for active travel.
The project focusses on the new Community Campus in the very centre of the area.
Liberton Community Campus

The new Liberton Community Campus will be a multi-purpose facility to help meet the needs of young people, their families and the wider community.
Its spaces have been designed to allow all generations to come together in a number of ways, including a community café, library and GP surgery. New sports facilities will feature bookable amenities for the whole community, including a fitness suite and dance studio.
To connect the hub with people from across the area, transport and mobility options are being improved throughout Liberton. Planned enhanced active travel networks will help to reduce congestion and provide a safer environment for walking, wheeling and cycling.
Our aim is for the Campus to put local people at the heart of everything, giving each person the ability to participate in all community and cultural activities.
You can find more details on the project on the Future Schools Edinburgh website.
Liberton Hospital development
We're working on a regeneration project to redevelop the former Liberton Hospital site to deliver new homes and increase the biodiversity of the area.
The aim is to deliver new homes for Edinburgh, including circa 50% Affordable Housing (Social Rent or Mid-Market Rent).
A draft masterplan has been developed with significant community involvement and it will ensure that the Principle of Placemaking remains at the heart of the development. The site will be well-connected to the wider community, embracing the City Mobility Plan and City Plan 2030 whilst also delivering a high-quality public realm.
The project will retain the site’s historic structures. We recognise the importance of the Edwardian hospital building, formal gardens, gatehouse and boundary wall.
We expect construction to start on site by the end of 2026. You can read more details about the Liberton Hospital project, including how this sits within wider development plans for the areas and a timeline of community engagement.
