20-minute neighbourhoods

Why we need a 20-minute neighbourhood approach

Edinburgh is one of the best cities in the world in which to live, work, study and play. Yet, like other cities, it is feeling the impacts of

  • climate change
  • poverty and health inequalities in our communities
  • demand for new homes and rising housing costs
  • traffic congestion and poor air quality in some areas.

We are committed to change. We want to lead the way in responding to climate change and the social inequalities felt by our residents.

Our City Plan 2030 aims to deliver 20-minute neighbourhoods for everyone across the city, helping to achieve our four key outcomes

  • a sustainable city which supports everyone’s physical and mental wellbeing
  • a city in which everyone lives in a home they can afford
  • a city where you don’t need to own a car to move around
  • a city where everyone shares in its economic success.
