Council house repairs

Shared spaces and stair lighting

We are responsible for carrying out repairs so that your home is wind and water tight. If there is an issue outside your home, in the stair or shared areas we can only help to make this safe.

This is because all owners share responsibility to maintain these areas and need to pay their share.

Owners must all agree to have a repair carried out. Any owner can lead this process but they must engage with the other owners to get permission to proceed.

The Council is currently developing a process for dealing with these requests and recovering funds from private owners. If we do not do this then the Council loses valuable funds that support our repair service for Council tenants.

Stair lighting

The Council will carry out emergency repairs for stair lighting where there is at least one council tenancy in the building. Buildings that are privately owned are responsibile for maintaining and repairing their own stair lighting systems.
