Apply for P1
If your child's date of birth is between
- 1 March 2016 and 28 February 2017 they are due to start primary school in August 2021 and should by now be registered for school
- 1 March 2017 and 28 February 2018 they are due to start primary school in August 2022.
If you are in the City of Edinburgh Council area you must register your child for P1 when registration opens in October 2021.
You can apply to defer your child's entry to P1 for a year, but we recommend you still register. Read about deferring entry to P1.
If you live outside the catchment area of the school you wish your child to attend, you can make a separate placing request in addition to registering.
Section two of the Placing in Schools guide outlines how to apply for P1.
Register for P1
You have a choice of two catchment schools
- Roman Catholic (RC).
If you want your child to be taught in Gaelic, you can instead choose to register for Edinburgh’s Gaelic school, Bun-sgoil Taobh na Pàirce. No knowledge of the language is needed for entry to P1.
If too many children register for the RC school, we give priority to children who are baptised in the Roman Catholic faith.
Children who are turned down at their RC school are given a place in their non-denominational school.
Late registration for children starting P1 in August 2021
If you have recently moved or are moving to Edinburgh before 18 August 2021 and wish to register your child for P1, complete the change of address form.
If you did not register for any other reason, please email us giving
- your full name
- your child's full name and date of birth
- your address including postcode
- name of the preferred catchment school you wish your child to attend
Decisions on school places
Decisions on non-catchment placing requests and requests for Roman Catholic schools were made on 26 March 2021.
Request a school outside your catchment area
You can also make a placing request for a school in a different catchment area.
