Why we are improving the area
Smokey Brae is an important link between communities in the east of the city, from London Road at Jock’s Lodge to the historic village of Restalrig.
Its roundabout with Restalrig Avenue and Marionville Avenue is unsafe and unpleasant for walking or cycling, particularly for anyone with limited mobility.
The current layout deters people from choosing more sustainable ways to travel for everyday journeys.
Improvements along this key route will
- provide better connections to local communities and facilities
- make it safer so more people can choose sustainable travel.
The Smokey Brae project is part of the wider Meadowbank Regeneration area.
We consulted on the project in 2022. Find out more about the consultation and you can also download a pdf of the full Consultation Report. This document is not fully accessible. You can contact the team if you need any help with this.
Smokey Brae as it looks now
- a narrow and guard-railed pavement
- a lack of safe infrastructure for cyclists
- poor street lighting
- poor road surface
