English for speakers of other languages classes and support

General English courses: Centre for Open Learning, University of Edinburgh

General English courses (ESOL) delivered face to face on Holyrood Campus of the University of Edinburgh. Please, note, we do not offer literacy courses.

Academic year is divided into three terms of ten weeks:

  • term 1: 30 September to 6 December
  • term 2: 20 January to 28 March 
  • term 3: 14 April to 20 June.

Course programme

They offer three courses at beginners and elementary level in the mornings. These are exclusively for displaced persons.

  • Beginners Step 1 (CEFR A1) – Thursdays, 11.10am to 12.40pm
  • Elementary Step 1 (CEFR A2.1) – Tuesdays, 11.10am to 12.40pm
  • Elementary Step 4 (CEFR A2.2) – Thursdays, 11.10am to 12.40pm.

They also offer three courses at Intermediate and Upper Intermediate level in the evenings. These General English courses are available to all but have places reserved for displaced persons.

  • Intermediate Step 1 (CEFR B1.1) – Tuesdays, 5.30pm to 7.00pm
  • Intermediate Step 4 (CEFR B1.2) – Tuesdays, 5.30pm to 7.00pm
  • Upper Intermediate Step 4 (CEFR B2.2) – Wednesdays, 5.30pm to 7.00pm.

Please note that in these evening classes, students with displaced backgrounds will learn side by side with learners from different backgrounds from the local community.

Each class runs for 90 minutes.

Registering

Registration for all General English courses is now open. Register for a course. Before you register, please, check which level of General English is right for you, by using the centre’s General English self-assessment tool on the university’s website. Applications for term 1 will be open from 12 August to 19 September.
