Why we're improving the area
We are proposing to make improvements to the existing roundabout at Davidson’s Mains (the junction of Main Street/ Quality Street/ Cramond Road South/ East Barnton Gardens).
The junction is in the centre of the urban village of Davidson's Mains and forms a key element of the road network linking the A90 (Queensferry Road) to Cramond Village for vehicular traffic. Two regular bus services (Lothian Buses 21 and 47) also use the roundabout, and all four arms carry a high level of pedestrian activity including a significant level of children using it as a route to Davidson's Mains Primary School.
The existing arrangement incorporates a split-stage zebra crossing on the three main arms which are in excess of 12m wide between kerb lines. The refuge islands on these crossings are substandard and do not comply with current standards.
Historically, the junction, and its immediate vicinity, has been the site of several accidents, a significant proportion of which involved pedestrians, however, there have been no further reported injury accidents since 2017. Although the speed limit has since been reduced from 30mph to 20mph, there remains significant concern from the community regarding the historical collision record, speed of traffic, the number of near misses and damage only collisions.
We propose make modifications to the junction which will improve safety for pedestrians including those with mobility issues and cyclists. In doing so, we seek to provide a space which is more people focussed where residents and visitors can shop, relax and live comfortably in this space.
