How we are using engagement to develop the designs
We have been speaking with key stakeholders as part of the preliminary design work. This has helped us understand how the area is used and what can be done to improve it.
This engagement has focused on how the proposals could work in practice and how the design can balance movement, access, servicing, public transport, better streets and spaces around the square and its heritage.
Feedback has helped us shape the preliminary design proposals and will help develop the next stage of doing more detailed designs.

Who we have engaged with
We have talked to a range of organisations and groups with an interest in St Andrew Square and the surrounding streets. This has included:
- local businesses and landowners
- accessibility and equalities representatives
- Community Councils
- public transport and taxi operators
- Spokes
- heritage and townscape organisations
- emergency services
- Council teams responsible for transport, streets and public spaces, planning, roads, accessibility and city centre projects
- project teams for nearby schemes, including George Street and the First New Town, Charlotte Square and the City Centre West to East Link
What you told us and how this has shaped the design
A number of common themes have been raised:
- improve conditions for people walking and wheeling
- provide clear, safe and accessible crossings
- create a protected and continuous cycle route through the area
- maintain access for buses, taxis, blue badge users, loading, servicing and emergency vehicles
- support local businesses and hotels around the square
- respect its historic character and setting
- avoid unnecessary clutter in the street
- provide clear links to nearby city centre projects
- make sure temporary layouts during construction are safe and easy to understand
We also heard that the design needs to work both as a local improvement around St Andrew Square and as part of the wider city centre walking, wheeling and cycling network.
We will continue to review proposals and engage with stakeholders at key stages throughout the project.
