St Andrew Square - improving streets and public spaces

The preliminary design

We are currently preparing the preliminary construction designs and have used feedback from various groups to help us develop them.

The next stage is developing the detailed designs which will include arrangements for parking, loading, taxis, blue badge access, public transport, junctions, crossings, materials, drainage, underground services and how construction will be managed.

We are planning for construction to start in autumn 2027.

The proposed plan for St Andrew Square

Summary of proposed changes:

  • the eastern pavement will be widened to 6 metres, creating more space for people to move around.
  • a new protected two-way cycle track will be introduced on the east side of St David Street and along the north side of St Andrew Square.
  • junction upgrades will support safer, easier and more accessible movement for people walking, wheeling and cycling.
  • existing blue badge, loading and taxi spaces will be retained along the southern side, with additional capacity added.
  • existing pay and display parking will be removed along the northern side and replaced with blue badge spaces on the northern side of the road.

How we are delivering the project

This project is the first of a few planned improvement projects in the area, including the George Street and the First New Town project.

When this project is first built, some temporary connections will be put in place, so that the area is safe and easy to use when the improvements around St Andrew Square are delivered.

When the nearby projects are built, they will complete the changes, so that the area matches the longer-term designs shown above.
