New Blackhall Library

Temporary Library at Davidson’s Mains Primary School

Background

Blackhall Library is currently closed due to the discovery of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC). The detailed assessment of RAAC in this building concluded that, due to the poor condition of many panels, the level of work needed meant it wasn’t possible to keep running services from the building until a long term solution could be agreed.

A mobile library service has been in operation since 2023. You can find out more about this service on our Library Directory pages.

The original Blackhall Library was a very popular resource and provided a wide range of library services, community events and activities. We know it’s important that people across Blackhall and Davidson’s Mains have access to quality local services in places that are convenient and accessible.

Your temporary library facility

Planning permission was granted for a temporary library facility at Davidson’s Mains Primary School in June 2025. This will replace the current mobile library service.

Groundworks have now started on site, with the modular building being delivered to the site in late November. We anticipate that the temporary library building will open in spring 2026.

The temporary unit will provide access to library services while we continue work on a long-term plan for the library and other community services in the area.

During the development of the temporary library we’ve consulted with the Davidson’s Mains Primary School community to ensure the facility supports the needs of the school, its pupils and staff.

We’re carrying out additional works at the school to support the delivery of the library, including new fencing, works to the playground to provide new fire safety arrangements and proposed road safety works.
