Cost of living payment, school holiday payments and Scottish Child Bridging payments

Teacher’s strike – 24 November 2022

Those who are eligible for free school meals will take home Thursday’s lunch on Wednesday with instructions for keeping it fresh until used.

No Free School meals payments will be made for the strike day.

Cost of Living Payment

At the council meeting on 25 August 2022, Councillors agreed that families with an income-based eligibility to Free School Meals will receive a one-off payment of £100 per child to help meet rising household costs.

In order to receive the one-off payment, an eligible application for Free School Meals/Clothing Grant must be received on or before 14 October 2022.

Families who received their Clothing Grant payment on or before 19 August 2022 will receive their one-off payment as follows

  • payments will be made into bank accounts on 31 August 2022
  • Paypoint payments were made on 30 August 2022

Families who received their Clothing Grant payment after 19 August 2022 will receive their one-off payment as follows

  • payments will be made into bank accounts on 31 October 2022
  • Paypoint payments were made on 27 October 2022

If you applied on or before 14 October 2022 but have not heard from us, you will receive the Cost of Living Payment when we process your application.

Scottish Government funded payments

The Scottish Government funds additional payments for families with an income-based eligibility to Free School Meals. They are free school meals payments during school holidays and Scottish Child Bridging Payments.

If you have applied for and been awarded free school meals and a clothing grant, payment will be made automatically using the payment details we currently hold for you. You do not need to make a separate application for these payments.

If your bank details change, you must tell us immediately using our contact schools transactions form.

Payments are made just before a school holiday. Holiday payments are £2.50 per child, for each day of the holiday (excluding weekends).

October holiday payment

The October holiday payment is £145 per child, made up of:

  • £15 holiday payment and 
  • £130 Scottish Child Bridging payment

Payments will be paid into bank accounts on 10 October 2022. Paypoint payments will be made between 10 October 2022 and 14 October 2022.

This payment is being made to all parents of children currently in receipt of income-based free school meals. No separate application is needed.

If you make an eligible application on or before the end of term on 14 October 2022, you will also receive the October holiday payment.

If you applied on or before 14 October 2022 but have not heard from us, we will award the October holiday payment when we process your application.

Christmas holiday payment

The Christmas holiday payment will be £287.50 per child, made up of:

  • £27.50 Free School Meals holiday payment
  • £260 Scottish Child Bridging Payment

Payments will be made into bank accounts on 05 December 2022. Paypoint payments will be made between 05 December 2022 and 09 December 2022.

Free School Meals payments during school holidays 2022/23

Free school meals payments will be made for the following school holidays:

  • October mid-term 2022
  • Christmas 2022
  • February mid-term 2023
  • Easter 2023

Scottish Child Bridging Payments

As announced by the First Minister on 10 October 2022, the Winter Scottish Child Bridging Payment will be doubled in value to £260 for every eligible child. 

No further Scottish Child Bridging Payments will be made after Christmas 2022.

Pre-school or nursery aged children are not eligible for these payments.

If your child gets free school meals under universal provision in P1 to P5, you will only get these payments if you apply for free school meals or clothing grant and meet the income-based eligibility criteria.

Move to Scottish Child Payment

The Scottish Child Payment is available for children under the age of 6. Find out more about the Scottish Child Payment on the Scottish Government website.

From 14th November 2022, applications have opened for children aged 6 to 15. The payment is £25 per week for each child up to the age of 16 (currently under 6s receive this at £20.00 per week). The Scottish Child Payment is delivered by Social Security Scotland.

It is not possible to automatically transfer from the Scottish Child Bridging Payments to the Scottish Child Payment. You must apply to Social Security Scotland from 14 November 2022.

You can apply online at mygov Scotland, the application should take around 10 to 20 minutes in total. Before applying, you'll need:

  • the dates of birth of any children you have
  • your partner's details, if you have a partner
  • your bank details, if you have an account
