Dundee Street and Fountainbridge

Overview of the Dundee Street and Fountainbridge proposals

Our plans involve moving on from the temporary infrastructure that is currently in place. This will help us to

  • build better pavements and crossings
  • upgrade and extend existing temporary cycleways with a high quality cycle route
  • provide better places to spend time with more seating and greenery.

The benefits

  • better for people of all ages and mobility to get to and from shops, facilities and schools the area
  • a more pleasant environment, less traffic dominated and more inviting for people of all ages and mobility to spend time in
  • more options for sustainable travel into the area from across Edinburgh.

Connecting to other routes

The high-quality cycling route and street improvements will provide an alternative to the shared Union Canal path, which is often busy with people walking, wheeling and cycling.

We will also connect the Telfer Subway and the Union Canal via Gibson Terrace, improving connections to the surrounding network from Roseburn, the Canal, the Meadows and beyond.

The proposals support our ambitious Fountainbridge Regeneration Masterplan which is seeing former industrial land converted to a high-quality, low carbon, mixed use development, creating a thriving and flourishing sustainable neighbourhood.

The project area

  • Dundee Street and Fountainbridge - between Angle Park Terrace and Ponton Street - including some side road treatments
  • Ashley Drive, Ogilvie Terrace, Harrison Gardens, West Bryson Road, Bryson Road and Fowler Terrace.

Key project features

  • Bike lanes which are protected from cars along Dundee Street and Fountainbridge, replacing temporary infrastructure.
  • Better pavements, crossings and public space, making the area more accessible for pedestrians and wheelchair users and more pleasant spaces to spend time in.
  • Easier ways to get to the Union Canal, including at Lochrin Basin and Gibson Terrace
  • Union Canal alternative for cyclists, via quiet route on Ashley Drive, Ogilvie Terrace, Harrison Gardens, West Bryson Road, Bryson Road and Fowler Terrace.
  • Some changes to how cars move around to make things safer, including one-way streets and junction changes. We’ll add things like bollards or planters to stop cars using some streets, so they’re quieter and safer.

To support local businesses, we will keep access for loading and deliveries where possible on main roads or relocate to side roads.
