How the trial will work
From early October 2026, we will extend bus lane times along the A1 and A199 between East Milton Road to Leith Walk along London Road.
The operating hours will be:
- 7am to 7pm, seven days a week
This is a change from:
- 7.30am to 9.30am and 4pm to 6.30pm Monday to Friday
To support these extended bus lane times, we need to change parking and loading restrictions along the route.
Changes to parking restrictions
Parking will not be permitted in bus lanes between 7am and 7pm, seven days a week.
We will change some existing single yellow lines, including within bus lanes, to align with the new operating hours. New single yellow lines will also be introduced on some sections of the route that currently have no parking restrictions.
We will not change parking restrictions within lay-bys including:
- resident permit bays
- pay-and-display bays
- free parking bays
This is because these are located outside the bus lanes.
Changes to loading restrictions
Loading and unloading of vehicles will still be permitted along the route outside of the busiest periods, and local signs and road markings will tell you where and at what times.
The busiest periods for buses are between 7am and 10am and between 4pm and 7pm on weekdays, when you will not be able to load or unload anywhere along the route, both within and outside bus lanes.
These restrictions will not apply to parking and loading areas located within lay-bys.
As parking will no longer be permitted in bus lanes for a longer period each day, this could increase the kerbside opportunities for loading and unloading closer to businesses and other premises.
Between 11am and 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays, loading and unloading will not be allowed between the Easter Road and Willowbrae Avenue junctions. Bus delays are typically worse on this section of the route. As with the weekday restrictions, this will not apply within lay-bys.
