Earn while you learn

Edinburgh Guarantee logo

Apprenticeships offer paid work while gaining experience and a recognised qualification at SCQF Level 5, 6, 7, 9, or 10. We commit to ensuring that at least 1% of our workforce are apprentices as part of the Edinburgh Guarantee.

We have a range of apprenticeships across the Council including

  • administration
  • social care
  • housing
  • procurement
  • childcare
  • trades
  • horticulture
  • business management
  • surveying.

These are offered at Foundation, Modern or Graduate level depending on the role.

Foundation Apprenticeships

A Foundation Apprenticeship (FA) allows you to gain work experience while in 5th or 6th year at school while achieving a recognised qualification at SCQF Level 6. This is usually one afternoon a week.

The qualification is funded by Skills Development Scotland and the work experience placements are unpaid. At present, we offer FAs in our early years teams.

Find out about Foundation Apprenticeships on the Apprenticeship.Scot website.

Modern Apprenticeships

You can apply for a Modern Apprenticeship (MA) if you are either

  • a school leaver within the last 3 years
  • aged between 16 - 29 years old, if you are care experienced or have a disability
  • currently employed by us but would like to be qualified for your role.

You would be classed as care experienced if you were looked after by the local authority at any point during your childhood. This includes being ‘looked after at home’ under a legal order, or ‘looked after away from home’ in a care setting such as foster care, kinship care or residential care.

As an employee with us, you would be on a fixed-term contract for two or four years, depending on the role.

Graduate Apprenticeships

Graduate Apprenticeships (GAs) are available to people of all ages. They give people the chance to gain a recognised qualification at SCQF Level 9 or 10 (degree level) while in work.

You may think that GAs are for people who have already completed a degree or higher, but that’s not the case. They are a great opportunity for those that are in work and looking to upskill in their chosen field.

As an employee with us, you would be on a fixed-term contract for four years.
