Low Emission Zone (LEZ)

Emission standards

We are following the minimum emissions standards for virtually all petrol and diesel vehicle classifications that are set out in the Low Emission Zones (Emission Standards, Exemptions and Enforcement) (Scotland) Regulations 2021.

Entry into the LEZ will be based on the Euro emission engine classification standards that are used both internationally and nationally.

The minimum criteria are

  • Euro 4 for petrol cars and vans - generally vehicles registered from 2006
  • Euro 6 for diesel cars and vans  - generally vehicles registered from September 2015
  • Euro 6 for petrol and diesel taxis and private hire vehicles, according to standard licence conditions, as set out in the Taxi Emission Standards Policy (2021)
  • Euro VI for buses, coaches and HGVs - generally vehicles registered from January 2013

All zero emission vehicles, including electric vehicles (EVs), meet the LEZ minimum emission standards.

Check your vehicle

You may check emission standards for the Edinburgh LEZ and other Scotland LEZ's with the online vehicle checker tool. The data accuracy of the vehicle checker service is always improving. If you think your result is incorrect, please submit evidence by way of a copy of your vehicle's V5C, certificate of conformity or a letter from the vehicle's manufacturer to lowemissionzonesenquiries@gov.scot. Note: the checker does not provide an exemption status and cannot check foreign vehicles.

For UK registered vehicles you may also check your vehicle's emissions with the Vehicle Certification Authority and with your manufacturer.

For non-UK registered vehicles your vehicle must be LEZ compliant to drive in the LEZ. Please contact your national vehicle authorities to confirm compliance status before your journey.
