Road safety in Edinburgh

Safe roads and roadsides

Streets can be designed so that when people make mistakes, they don't result in tragedies. Features like

  • protected cycle lanes
  • raised crossings
  • pedestrian islands
  • better sightlines.

Increase the safety of our roads and protect our most vulnerable road users.

Edinburgh is reshaping key streets through the City Mobility Plan. These streets will prioritise people who walk, wheel or cycle. These changes should reduce traffic congestion and improve junction safety. They help stop accidents and make everyday places nicer and easier to access.

What we are doing

  • To help children get to primary school, we have implemented several School Streets across the city. This initiative prohibits most vehicular traffic during school runs.
  • We want to prevent accidents using the Collision Investigation Protocol (CIP) process.
  • We are developing a new process for implementing pedestrian crossings.
  • The new process will allow for consideration of a crossing provision where if provided, demand would be created.
  • Officers will analyse the data to establish where crossings are needed and in highest demand.
  • The framework is based on a customer focused spatial approach, where citizens can add their crossing requests to an online map.

What you can do to help

  • Respect new layouts. They are built to protect people, not to cause inconvenience.
  • Park only where permitted. Blocked pavements can put people at risk.
  • Report damaged signusing our online form, railings or markings so they can be fixed.
  • Support projects that make walking and cycling safe for others.
