Road safety in Edinburgh

Safe road users

Most crashes begin with a human mistake. Not because people intend to cause harm, but because we are all human and sometimes misjudge, rush or get distracted. The safe system accepts that people will make mistakes and focuses on making sure those mistakes do not cost lives. Safe road use is about everyday behaviour:

  • Looking out for those more vulnerable than ourselves
  • Understanding the rules
  • Choosing the safest option even when it takes a few seconds longer

When more people choose to walk, wheel and cycle, the whole city benefits — but that only works when people driving behave with care, patience and responsibility.

What we are doing

  • Our youngest road users receive education on road usage and rules and how to safely ride a bike.
  • A lot of primary schools already have junior road safety officer. An annual event is held at City Chambers for pupils.
  • We organise an annual event specifically focused on young drivers. Smart choices, safer journeys.
  • Offering bikeability. Cycling training for everybody and all ages.
  • Be Bright, Be Seen, making sure every road user is clearly visible.

What you can do to help

  • Slow down near schools, crossings and busy streets.
  • Put phones away. Even a second of distraction can cost a life.
  • Look for people walking and cycling before turning or opening doors.
  • Choose active or public transport for short trips where possible.
  • Be patient. Someone else’s safety is worth a few extra seconds.
  • Make yourself aware and know the rules. Please be aware of the actual: The Highway Code  .
