Care homes - your home and savings

Selling your house or flat

Use the form below to check if you need to pay for your care using your savings and investments.

Check if you need to pay for a care home

We pay towards the first 12 weeks of your care home fees if you need to sell your home and you do not have enough savings to pay your charges. This is called a 12 week property disregard. This only applies to the first 12 weeks of your stay.

You can choose from a selected list of care homes who accept the standard rates that we pay, as long as they have a place for you and they can meet your care needs.

For the first 12 weeks of your stay we will pay a standard rate which will include entitlement to any free personal and nursing care payments. Your contribution will exclude the value of your home and include your weekly income.

Your contribution will include the value of your home from the date of the sale, if it is within the 12 week period.

At the end of the 12 weeks you will be charged the full costs less any free personal and nursing care payments.

You can choose a more expensive home if you wish but you will need to make your own arrangements with the care home to meet the extra costs.

We will include half the value of the profits from the sale in how we work out your ongoing charges if your home is in joint names.
