Essential works will be taking place on St Mary’s Street for around six months, starting on Monday 21 September.
The extensive project will focus on restoring the historic character and condition of the street through several key developments:
- Road Reconstruction: Completely reconstructing the carriageway and relaying the traditional stone setts.
- Pedestrian Safety: Upgrading the pedestrian crossing point located at Boyd's Entry, alongside kerb and pavement enhancements.
- Infrastructure Upgrades: Improving local drainage systems, refreshing road markings, and removing unused pavement clutter like redundant signage.
To facilitate the upgrades, no through traffic will be permitted on St Mary's Street for the duration of the project. However, access will be maintained for emergency vehicles, pedestrians, residents, businesses, and deliveries.
Works are expected to take place between 8am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. Some activities may need to be carried out outside these hours to minimise disruption or for safety reasons.
The project will be carried out in three phases. Temporary traffic management measures will shift with each phase and may include:
- Temporary road closures or local lane restrictions.
- Signed diversion routes for displaced traffic.
- Temporary parking suspensions and altered pedestrian pathways.
