Please report vehicles that look as though they have been dumped by emailing
streetenforcement@edinburgh.gov.uk
confirming
- what type of vehicle it is, for example, car, van, motorbike, caravan etc.
- where the vehicle is
- colour
- registration number
- make
- condition
- how long it has been there
- if it is taxed and if so when it is due to expire.
You may be asked to provide your
- name
- address
- phone number.
We will do some checks and if we find the vehicle has been abandoned we will place a notice on it. If the vehicle hasn't been moved by the time the notice expires, we will move it.
Abolition of tax disc
The paper tax disc no longer needs to be displayed on any vehicle's windscreen.
Check the tax status of a vehicle you believe may have been abandoned. This service is free and immediately provides the presence and expiry date of valid road tax for a given vehicle registration mark and vehicle make.
Land owners and factors
If you are a land owner or factor, it is your duty to find out owner details for any vehicle you suspect as being dumped on your land.
You can do this by sending letters to people living near you or by putting a letter on the vehicle asking the owner to contact you. You can also approach the DVLA, however there may be a charge to obtain owner details.
If you find that the vehicle is taxed or holds a Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN) and has a current keeper or owner registered with the DVLA, then we cannot move the vehicle for you. You would need to ask the owner or keeper to move it.
If you find that the vehicle has been dumped and you want us to remove it you can email us
streetenforcement@edinburgh.gov.uk.
Please note that we will then carry out our own checks and you will be charged for uplift costs.
Getting rid of a vehicle
If you have a vehicle you want to get rid of please contact a scrap dealer. Once the vehicle has been disposed of, ensure you tell the DVLA.
If the vehicle is being disposed of due to a road traffic crash, your insurance will arrange for it to be removed.
Under the Refuse Disposal Amenity (Scotland) Act 1978 dumping a vehicle is an offence carrying a fine of up to £2,500, three months in prison, or both.
We have the power to claim costs for removing, storing and getting rid of a vehicle from the person who dumped it.
