Help with job opportunities and return to work
The Edinburgh Guarantee is a free service to help you identify opportunities and prepare to return to work. Support is available to help you upskill, retrain or gain work experience. As part of our offer, we provide paid work placements across the Council.
These are funded and administered by us, in line with the Scottish Government’s No One Left Behind ethos. Work placements help you refresh your skills and increase your confidence and are available to individuals who are unemployed and meet 1 or more of the No One Left Behind funding eligibility criteria.
Types of placements
We can offer many placement opportunities across the Council, tailored to your skills, interests and experience. You will apply to the programme, and we will work with you to match you to the right team. Placements may include areas like
- supporting frontline services
- working with communities
- delivering digital or business improvements
- contributing to planning and development projects
- assisting with customer service or administrative tasks.
These are just examples. There are many different teams and types of work across the council, and we want to hear what you are interested in. Your application will help us find the right placement for you.
How the placements work
Placements last up to 26 weeks and will end no later than 31 March 2026. Placements can be between 10 to 36 hours per week, and payment starts at £12.69 per hour. Start and finish times will vary depending on the placement, as will location and number of hours per week.
You will meet with our team to decide what placement is right for you before completing an induction week. You will learn the values of the organisation and expectations of the placement. You will then meet the staff team you will be working with before starting your placement, who can help you learn to provide a high-quality service with enthusiasm and creativity.
Our team will support you during your placement with regular check-ins and reviews. We will support you to apply for jobs when the placement comes to an end, either within the Council or elsewhere.
The types of placements will depend on availability. Tell us in your application what type of placements you are interested in doing, and we will do our best to match you to one of these.
Some of these placements are regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. You may be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check.
