How to pay back overpayments

There are several ways you can pay back any overpayments of your Housing Benefit.

You can talk to us about setting up a payment plan if you can’t repay the full amount straight away.

Direct Debit

Direct Debit is safe, reliable and fast. You will be covered by the Direct Debit Guarantee. Call us during the office hours below to set up a Direct Debit.

Through your bank

Pay online, telephone banking or at a branch of your bank or building society. You should quote all of the following

  • The City of Edinburgh Council
  • bank sort code 83-06-08
  • account number 00740589
  • your invoice number.

In person

You can visit our Customer Hub at 249 High Street, Edinburgh EH1 1YJ.

  • Monday to Thursday from 8.30am - 4.30pm
  • Friday from 8.30am - 3pm.

You don't need an appointment to visit the Customer Hub. You are likely to wait less time if you visit before 11.30am.

You can also visit your neighbourhood office.

By post

Make your cheque or postal order payable to ‘The City of Edinburgh Council’. Write your name and invoice number on the back, then send it to us at the address provided.

Do not send cash or postdated cheques.
