Keeping cool in the heat
With temperatures forecast to remain high over the next few days and into next week, here are some tips on how to keep yourself and others cool in the heat.
Please read the Met Office’s top tips for keeping cool during warm weather, including:
- Drink plenty of fluids, and if you’re travelling, make sure you take water with you
- Avoid the hottest part of the day (11am to 3pm) and if you are out, wear a hat and sunscreen and stay in the shade
- Stay cool indoors - close curtains on rooms that face the sun to keep indoor spaces cooler, and remember it may be cooler outdoors than indoors
- Plan ahead for your journey - check your vehicles, such as tyres, coolant and oil levels, before heading out.
- Check on family, friends and neighbours who may be vulnerable in the heat
Keep up to date with the latest weather forecast and temperature warnings – you can find these on TV, radio, the Met Office mobile app or the Met Office website.
Water safety
We would also remind people to take care around open water during hot weather. Swimming in open water can cause cold water shock, and hidden hazards can pose serious risks even on very warm days. There’s advice on the RNLI’s website about what to do if you get into trouble in the water.
