Broxburn to Gogar

Improving journeys on the A8 and A89

We are working with West Lothian Council and Transport Scotland to improve journeys on the A8 and A89 between Broxburn and Gogar.

The Scottish Government is investing £20 million and we are investing £16 million to

  • make it quicker and easier to travel by bus
  • make it easier for people to walk and cycle
  • create more consistent journey times.

These transport improvements will support plans for growth in west Edinburgh including a new neighbourhood with housing, schools, transport, green spaces, leisure and retail.

What we are doing

We will create a new

  • transport mobility hub in Broxburn
  • eastbound bus lane between Ingliston and Gogar
  • westbound bus lane between Ingliston and Newbridge
  • eastbound bus lane between the Broxburn viaduct and Newbridge.

These bus lanes will be in addition to existing general traffic lanes.

We will also upgrade the cycling, walking and wheeling paths and build several new crossings on the A8.

Timescales

We expect to complete the improvements by the end of 2029.

  • April to September 2025 – site investigations
  • Autumn 2025 – complete detailed designs
  • Spring 2027 – procure and award contract
  • Autumn 2027 – construction starts
  • Late 2029 – project completed
