Polwarth pavement and road improvements

More about our design choices

The area recently had its pavements resurfaced, and our design builds on that work.

Zebra crossings instead of push button crossings

We've been asked to consider push button crossings, but zebra crossings encourage all users to look out for each other and put pedestrians first. Push button crossings work better in other situations, but we've assessed the traffic and pedestrian levels in the case and believe zebra crossings are the best choice for this area.

Removing guard rails

With much wider pavements, we can remove the existing pedestrian guard rails. This will create better public spaces and make drivers more aware as they pass through the area.

Parking changes

Any scheme like this will naturally affect parking, but we've tried to keep this to a minimum. We've also found space for 2 disabled bays that don't replace any existing parking.

Option 1 provides 2 loading bays. One can be used for parking in the evenings and at weekends.

Option 2 adds another loading bay that can also be used for additional parking in the evenings and weekends. We developed this second option after talking with local businesses about their practical needs for deliveries and customers visiting nearby shops.

Overall, we believe both options would rebalance the area in favour of pedestrians and cyclists, as well as people who live, work, shop and spend leisure time here. They would do this without stopping people who travel through the area from being able to continue doing so freely.
