Edinburgh’s long-standing status as a Fairtrade City has been officially reaffirmed following a presentation of a certificate from the Fairtrade Foundation.
The renewed recognition celebrates over two decades of dedication, honouring the capital’s continuous passion and commitment to supporting Fairtrade farmers and workers across the globe since the city first achieved the status in 2004. The Lord Provost Robert Aldridge and Depute Lord Provost Lezley Marion Cameron met with members of the Edinburgh Fairtrade City Steering Group to receive the certificate and congratulate them on its successful retainment.
Securing this renewal highlights Edinburgh’s ongoing dedication to promoting Fairtrade and increasing the use of licensed products carrying the Fairtrade Mark. This widely recognised symbol provides customers with reassurance that producers receive fair prices alongside the enforcement of stringent social, economic, and environmental standards.
The Fairtrade Foundation’s presentation highlights the vital role that Edinburgh’s businesses, communities, and residents play in creating a more equitable global trade system.

I am very pleased to receive this certificate confirming the renewal of City of Edinburgh’s Fairtrade Community status, and congratulate the Edinburgh Fairtrade City Steering Group on its work in achieving this. By buying Fairtrade, we ensure that the people who have produced our favourite products have earned a fairer income and have agency over their lives. Many farmers are still paid less than it costs to produce their crops. Fairtrade tackles this with Minimum Prices and the Fairtrade Premium, giving farmers protection when markets drop and helping build stronger communities.
