As Edinburgh prepares to welcome another summer of festivals, there is a familiar sense of anticipation across our city.
For residents, it marks the return of world-class performances on our doorstep. For visitors, it is an opportunity to experience one of the world’s greatest cultural celebrations. And for all of us, it is a reminder of what makes Edinburgh such an international city.
Last year alone, we welcomed around four million visitors from more than 100 countries, while artists and participants travelled here from 83 nations and every corner of the globe. That diversity is one of our greatest strengths. It brings fresh ideas, new perspectives, and unforgettable experiences, creating an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world.
From internationally acclaimed performers to exciting new talent taking their first steps onto the global stage, this year’s programme once again offers something for everyone. Whether you’re a lifelong festival-goer or looking to discover something new, August is a chance to experience the very best of arts, culture, and creativity right here in our capital.
We’re also proud to host major events at Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium and the Royal Highland Centre’s Summer Sessions, welcoming local and international artists including The Prodigy, Lorde and Biffy Clyro. Together, these events will bring even more energy to an already vibrant city.
This year also marks an important milestone with the introduction of the visitor levy. This modest contribution from overnight visitors gives us a unique opportunity to invest in the services and public spaces that make Edinburgh so special. It will help us better manage the impact of tourism and major events while ensuring our city continues to function for everyone who lives, works, and visits here. The success of that depends on careful planning and close partnership working.
I know many residents and businesses continue to be affected by the closure of Princes Street. I am acutely aware of the disruption this has caused, and I want to repeat my thanks to everyone for their continued patience during what has been an incredibly difficult period. We are doing everything within our power to reopen Princes Street as soon as it is safe to do so.
With the road closure and the significant increase in visitor numbers throughout August, I encourage everyone to plan ahead before travelling into the city. We’ve brought together practical advice to help people navigate Edinburgh and make the most of everything on offer on our website.
Most importantly, I’d encourage everyone to continue supporting our fantastic local businesses. Edinburgh is very much open, and our shops, cafés, restaurants, and venues are ready to welcome residents and visitors alike.
