Lord Provost pays tribute to rugby legend Scott Hastings

Edinburgh's Lord Provost Robert Aldridge has paid tribute to Scott Hastings as it was announced yesterday (Sunday 17 May) that he has died aged 61.

The City of Edinburgh Lord Provost Robert Aldridge said:

I was saddened to hear of the passing of rugby legend Scott Hastings over the weekend.

Scott was not only one of Scotland’s most respected sporting figures, but also someone whose passion for the city and its people was evident throughout his life. His love for the community, his pride in representing Scotland, and the warmth and generosity he showed to others through his support of multiple charities made him admired far beyond the rugby field.

He earned 65 caps for Scotland over an 11 year international career, represented the British & Irish Lions on two tours and played 13 games for the Barbarians. Here at home he was a proud Watsonian and also wore the Edinburgh jersey for four years.

He was also a tireless charity campaigner, a friend and champion of Doddie Weir in life and in death and was chairman of My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, collecting a cheque from my predecessor Frank Ross on behalf of the One City Trust in 2019.

Whether through sport, charitable work, or his connection to the capital,  Scott’s impact will be long remembered and celebrated.

At this difficult time, my thoughts are with his children, family, friends, former teammates, and all those across the rugby community and the city who mourn his loss. His legacy will endure not only in Scottish rugby, but in the hearts of all who knew and admired him.
