Countdown to the Corstorphine/Murrayfield by-election

BT Murrayfield by-election

With just two days to go until the Corstorphine/Murrayfield by-election, our elections team has been urging residents in the area to cast their votes on Thursday 9 March.

The sun shone as elections officers visited BT Murrayfield, one of nine polling places being used for the vote, to demonstrate the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system, which is used in local elections.

Residents in Corstorphine, Murrayfield, Balgreen, Broomhall, Carrick Knowe, Ravelston and Roseburn who are aged 16 or over and have registered to vote can participate in Thursday’s by-election. Together they will select a new councillor for the ward, which has a current electorate of 19,435.

Returning Officer for Edinburgh, Andrew Kerr, said:

As with any electoral event in Edinburgh, our Elections team work hard to ensure it runs smoothly.

As we approach the by-election I would encourage residents of the Corstorphine/Murrayfield ward to make a trip to their local polling place to have their say and help elect a councillor to represent the community on matters affecting the ward and the entire city.

Our elections pages also contain useful information on how the Single Transferable Vote system works, i.e. that you need to use numbers to rank as many or as few candidates as you choose in order of preference. And if you've applied for and received a postal ballot pack, remember to return it as soon as possible to make sure your vote counts.

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on 9 March and are located:

  • Murrayfield Parish Church Centre
  • Saughton Crescent Scout Hall
  • BT Murrayfield
  • Corstorphine St Ninian's Church Hall
  • St. Anne's Parish Church Hall
  • 10th Craigalmond Scout Hall
  • Corstorphine Library
  • Carrick Knowe Parish Church Hall
  • Tesco Extra

Anyone living in the area who is aged 16 or over and has registered can vote in the by-election, and votes can be cast by post or by proxy if more convenient.

The result of the by-election will be announced once the votes are counted after polls close at 10pm on Thursday, 9 March.
