Improving the path that links Currie and Juniper Green
We have been working with the community to develop a plan to improve the path which connects Currie and Juniper Green along Muir Wood field.
What to expect
In early March, we will start work to upgrade the path. This will take up to five weeks and will be delivered by Luddon Construction. We will install lighting after this work.
To keep everyone safe we need to close the path during construction. The alternative route is along Lanark Road West.

We apologise for the disruption and appreciate your patience during this time.
Overview of the project
This popular, but informal and muddy path between Muir Wood Road in Currie and Bloomiehall Park in Juniper Green is well used by Currie High School pupils, families and dog walkers.
Thanks to the work of the Community Councils of Currie, Juniper Green and Baberton, funds were secured to design and develop a permanent, hard-surface path that the whole community can share, all year round. They also worked with the communities to develop the design.
The Council will upgrade the path with funding from Walking Scotland (formerly Paths for All) of £270,000. We will also own and maintain it.
Edinburgh & Lothian Greenspace Trust is managing the funding, as well as the ecological aspect of the project.
What changes will be made to the path
- A permanent, hard surface which works for everyone in all weather and at all times of year.
- Two benches and a new bin.
- The book cabinet will be kept but relocated slightly to provide safe access to the path.
- Wayfinding signs will point to local destinations such as Bloomiehall Park and Currie High School.
- LED low lighting that is suitable for a remote path will make the path safer and easier to use in the dark.
More information on lighting columns
The columns
- are directional so will mainly light the path and not the surrounding area
- will have an average lighting level which is well below that of standard residential street lights
- will have motion sensors to reduce lighting when the path is not used
- use a colour that does not disturb bats that may be in the area.
