Make Flora Stevenson Primary School Playground Safe - Petitions (Open)

We call on the City of Edinburgh Council to properly address three core failings in the playground at Flora Stevenson Primary School: - The woodchip surfacing is not safe. Sharp debris, including broken glass and nails, has been found in it on multiple occasions since by children playing at ground level. We ask the Council to remove and replace the woodchip, not simply continue spot-checking it and laying more woodchip on top of already contaminated woodchip. - The Council's response to this was to install a wooden retaining border around some of the woodchip over the summer. This border has itself already caused multiple accidents. We ask the Council to remove or redesign this structure and commission an independent assessment of it as a trip hazard. - The Council and school have repeatedly cited the playground being open to the public, and the Council procurement process, as the reasons greater investment and redevelopment have not taken place. We ask the Council to publish a clear, evidenced explanation of why this playground must remain open outside school hours, what it would cost to maintain and secure it properly regardless and to implement a transparent procurement process that allows parents to be part of the planning and decision-making going forward. As the Scottish Government's own Play Strategy for Scotland states, every child has the right to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to their age. This playground falls well short of that standard, and the response so far has produced a second hazard rather than a fix.
