Urgent Road Safety Improvements Required on Station Road and High Street, Kirkliston - Petitions (Open)
Petition details
I am writing on behalf of the concerned residents of Kirkliston to formally raise what we believe is an urgent and increasingly serious road safety issue affecting those who live, work and travel along Station Road, the High Street, and surrounding areas of the village. Despite previous accidents, and countless near misses, meaningful action has not been taken to address the problem. Many residents now feel that these concerns have been ignored for far too long. Vehicles frequently approach and navigate this section of road at speeds that are clearly inappropriate for a residential village environment. Residents regularly witness drivers braking suddenly, losing control, crossing the centre line, and narrowly avoiding collisions. The dangerous bend that connects Station Road and the High Street remains one of the most concerning locations within the village and continues to present a clear risk to both pedestrians and drivers. This route is used not only by cars but also by significant volumes of heavy traffic including HGVs, agricultural and farm vehicles, delivery vehicles, and double-decker buses. The size, weight and speed of many of these vehicles further increase the risks associated with this section of road. The concern is not simply the volume of traffic using this route, but the nature of that traffic. Combined with excessive speeds, restricted visibility at junctions and the dangerous bend, the likelihood of serious accidents is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. What is particularly difficult for residents to understand is the inconsistency in road safety provision throughout the village. Significant traffic calming measures, speed bumps and crossings have been installed in other areas, such as Queensferry Road, while the original part of the village continues to be left without comparable protections despite carrying substantial traffic volumes and accommodating vulnerable road users. I am therefore formally requesting the following measures to be implemented at the earliest convenience, listed in order of priority:
1. Speed tables or cushions on and around the Station Road / High Street bend, similar to those successfully implemented on Queensferry Road.
2. Improved visibility measures, including traffic mirrors where appropriate, for vehicles turning into Station Terrace, Auld Gate, Cobblers Close and Wellflats.
3. Clear and prominent "SLOW" warning signage throughout the affected area.
4. Safe pedestrian crossing points, particularly in locations where residents need to access bus stops and other key village amenities.
