Repair and Improve Broomhouse Pavements - Petitions (Open)
Petition details
We are members of a walking group in Broomhouse, part of the charity ‘B health Together’. Our aim is to improve health and mobility, thereby reduce falls, have stronger muscles and contribute to better mental health. Many of us walk with aids, sticks or walking frames. We meet weekly at the Broomhouse Hub and walk around several blocks.
However, our efforts of walking to improve our health are severely hindered by the rather neglected pavements and we find we have great difficulties.
We would like to appeal to the council to repair and improve the following on our pavements:
1. Significant unevenness with many tripping hazards, some obviously derived from electricity/ gas/ cable companies having dug up the pavement, later repaired like patchwork.
2. Sloping of the whole pavement (to allow cars to get to their driveways) making us walk lopsided, creating balance problems.
3. Too narrow pavement, often increased by overgrowing hedges.
4. Not enough dropped curbs to allow wheelchair access crossing, and existing dropped curbs are difficult to negotiate for wheelers because they are unevened and too high.
Inequalities in health are linked to inequalities in recreational facilities, access to parks and public transport. Edinburgh’s reputation will be judged not just by its stunning art galleries, festivals, universities, hotels and shopping facilities but also by how it distributes its wealth to all its inhabitants.
