Blackhall Library - temporary closure
Blackhall Library is currently closed due to the discovery of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC).
Investigations to date have confirmed that the roof structure of the whole building contains RAAC. While the detailed assessment of the condition of each RAAC plank is ongoing, many of the panels already assessed are in poor condition. In a large section of the building the ceilings and services have to be removed in order that the detailed assessment of each plank can be completed.
The poor condition of the RAAC inspected to date, and the level of propping which has been required to be put in place, means that the building will not be able to reopen until the RAAC which is in poor condition has been replaced. An overall update on RAAC was submitted to Finance and Resource Committee on 25 January 2024. Whilst a full appraisal for Blackhall Library has not yet been completed details of the Committee meeting can be found on the this website under the Council and Committees area and via the link below.
In the meantime, a mobile library is providing services in the car park of Davidson Mains Church and we have alternative arrangements in place for some of our other services.
The mobile bus service will be situated in the car park of Davidson Mains Church, 1 Quality St, Edinburgh, EH4 5BB.
The bus is scheduled for its regular service during week beginning 22 April. We hope the bus may be available for part of the week and we'll update this web page when dates are confirmed.
The following scheduled dates for the mobile library service are
Monday 6 May from 1.30 to 6pm
Tuesday 7 May from 10.30am to 3pm
Wednesday 8 May from 10.30am to 3pm
Thursday 9 May from 10.30am to 3pm
Friday 10 May from 10.30 to 3pm.
You will be able to return loans, borrow a limited selection of books, apply for bus passes, collect hearing aid batteries and free sanitary products.
Alternatively, you can visit any other Edinburgh Library for any of your library services (including returning books). Your nearest libraries are:

During Blackhall Library's temporary closure, many of the library's regular activities have moved to alternative locations. Please contact Blackhall Library for any further information.
