A boat hire licence is required: for the use of a vessel in the course of a business carried on the sea or rivers within the City of Edinburgh area; for letting it for hire or reward; or carrying up to 12 passengers for pleasure, recreational, educational or sporting purposes

*please note that a 20% surcharge is payable for all temporary licence applications submitted within 28 days of the date the licence is due to start

an additional 20% 'late fee' charge is payable for any temporary licence application received within 28 days of the date the licence is due to start.

What you need to supply

A copy of your Third Party Indemnity Insurance Policy 
A certificate issued by a suitably qualified person stating that each vessel to which your application relates is suitably designed, constructed, maintained and equipped and in a safe condition for the purpose for which, and the place or waters in which it is to be used, must be also be produced with the application.

Additional information

You cannot apply to renew a licence after it has expired.  An application for licence renewal must be made before the expiry of the current licence.  Any application made up to 28 days later will be a ‘late application.’

if a late application is received, the original licence will expire on the date marked on the licence. However, if the Council decides that ‘Good Cause’ has been shown for the late submission of the application, the previous licence will remain in effect while the renewal is being processed.  You can download our Policy on late applications for further information
