Keep up to date with all the latest information on the new Currie Community High School
Principles and standards
The new school building has been designed in line with the guiding principles of the Scottish Government's Learning Estate Strategy. The new building is due to open January 2025.
We are building the new school to Passivhaus standards which provides comfort but uses little energy for heating and cooling. It is aiming to be the first Passivhaus secondary school in Scotland.
A brief was developed for the new school which was influenced by the school's vision and the feedback from engagement. A series of education workshops were held with the school’s senior team to plan their principles for education, inclusion, outdoor learning and sustainability, digital learning and community access. Strengthening this we had virtual meetings with colleagues from the Council who are specialised in these five areas. This has informed the design of the new building.
Engagement
We engaged with
- learners from Currie Community High School and P7 learners from the cluster primary schools on 24 May 2019
- community members with Currie Community and Balerno High School learners at an event held on 19 June 2019.

The school presented their vision for the new school to the parents in partnership meeting on 30 October 2019.
In November 2019 we asked parents, teachers, learners and the community to help shape the brief for the school by filling out online questionnaires. We attended the South West Villages Living Well drop-in event at Currie Kirk, Gibson Craig Hall on 7 November 2019 and shared the school's vision and the questionnaire with attendees.
In January 2020 we met with the headteachers and parent council chairs of Currie High School, Woodlands and the cluster primary schools to start planning our engagement program with the parents, staff and learners of the school community. Further talks with parents, locals and learners were held throughout the briefing and design process.
In January 2021 we met with the headteachers, parent council chairs of Currie High School, Woodlands and the cluster primary schools and local councillors to share a presentation on the plans and ambitions for the new school. We shared a brief for each of the new learning zones; STEM, Languages and Humanities, Expressive Arts, Health and Wellbeing and Integrated Support. This was written by the Learning Estate Planning team and the school and contains images for inspiration, this has continued to be used as a guide throughout the project.
