What Are Children’s Rights?
Recognising success!
Within Edinburgh, there is some great innovative practice, approaches and relationships which demonstrate the UNCRC in practice and thinking. The Edinburgh Children’s Partnership (multi-agency community planning partnership) reports on progress, good practice and next steps, and it is vital to hear from council organisations, NHS & police colleagues, the third sector and directly from children, young people and their families. What Are Children’s Rights?
Every child has rights—the right to be safe, healthy, and heard. These rights help children and young people grow up feeling valued, protected, and supported.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is an important set of rights that Scotland is committed to upholding. It ensures that all children and young people:
- Are treated fairly and with respect.
- Have a say in decisions that affect them.
- Are protected from harm.
- Have access to education, healthcare, and support.
These rights apply to every child and young person, no matter their background, family situation, or personal circumstances. Explore a family-friendly version of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child or access a print PDF version that explains key principles of UNCRC.
Why Do Children’s Rights Matter?
- For children & young people – your voice matters! You have the right to share your opinions and be listened to.
- For parents & families – understanding children’s rights helps build stronger, happier families. When children feel respected and supported, they thrive.
- For communities – protecting children’s rights creates a better future for everyone. It helps build safer, kinder, and more inclusive communities.
