Citizenship ceremonies

There is a 12 week wait from receiving your citizenship approval letter to the Home Office sending The City of Edinburgh Council your Naturalisation Certificate.

The City of Edinburgh Council will only receive your Naturalisation Certificate if you have selected this as the place you wish your ceremony to be carried out at.

After the 12 week waiting period the Home Office will send you either a physical invitation letter or an email invitation asking you to contact City of Edinburgh Council as they have now dispatched your certificate.

If you have received the invitation letter from the Home Office please complete the citizenship form and email it to

If you have not received the invitation letter but know that your certificate is being sent to City of Edinburgh Council, fill out the form and email it to

Once we receive your Naturalisation Certificate we will contact you to arrange your ceremony.

Once the attached form has been returned to us and we have received your paperwork from the Home Office we will contact you by telephone/email to arrange a date and time for your ceremony.  Currently ceremonies are being conducted within 3-4 weeks of us receiving confirmation from the Home Office. All ceremonies are carried out in a strict ‘ceremony by date’ order.

You will be asked for your Home Office invitation and photographic ID at the start of the ceremony.

After the ceremony your certificate will be posted to you by Royal Mail Tracking Service. Your certificate will be posted to the address we have on file for you, if the address is for a lawyer, solicitor or immigration company it will be sent to their address and you will have to arrange with them to receive your certificate. If you have recently changed your address please notify the Home Office as soon as possible so that we can receive instruction from them regarding your new address.
