Work out your care home charge

If you have less than £35,000

You can choose a care home from a list of homes who accept the standard rates that we pay, as long as they have a place for you.

We

  • pay the care home a standard cost, which includes any free personal and nursing care, and you pay a charge which depends on your income and savings.
  • ask you to complete a financial assessment form. When you return the form, you need to include copies of bank and building society statements.
  • ask you to sign a contract which details the cost of the care home and your charge.

It is illegal to give away property or money to another person so that you can qualify for financial help from us. If we think that you have given away assets or money to reduce or avoid care home fees, we can include their value in how we work out your charges.

You can choose a more expensive care home if you wish. You will need a person other than yourself who is willing to pay the extra costs. This person needs to sign an agreement with the care home agreeing to pay the extra costs. You and the person who has agreed to pay the extra costs need to discuss this with us before you go into a care home.
