Burdiehouse to Mortonhall - walking, wheeling and cycling improvements

About this project

We want to change the roads and pavements in the Burdiehouse and Mortonhall area to give more space for safer walking, wheeling and cycling.

We’re proposing changes to sections of Burdiehouse Road and Frogston Road East. The improvements will include:

  • segregated cycle tracks (cycle space separated from the road by a buffer, and separate from the pavement for pedestrians)
  • new signalised crossing points, for both pedestrians and cyclists
  • safer pedestrian crossing at junctions, through road narrowing and raised crossing points.
  • road resurfacing where needed
  • improving conditions for all users at Kaimes Junction, including upgrading the existing signalling system
  • better connections to the wider walking, wheeling and cycling network

We are continuing to develop the design for the area that we presented at our previous consultation, in June and July 2022. We will continue to incorporate community feedback as the project continues to move through the next stages of design.

The project area

This extends along Frogston Road East, from Mortonhall Gate to the Kaimes Junction, down the A701 Burdiehouse Road to Clippens Drive.

Funding

The design stage of this project has been funded by Sustrans Scotland, who funded 100% of the design costs, through the Places for Everyone funding programme.

Places for Everyone is an active travel infrastructure fund supported by Transport Scotland which helps deliver walking, wheeling and cycling improvements across Scotland.

Funding has yet to be secured to cover the construction costs of this project. It is expected that this will be met from funding direct from Transport Scotland, the Council’s Active Travel Investment Programme, and developer contributions.
