Bin collections during bad weather

Keeping bins safe in high winds

We know that when it’s windy bins can blow over and spill their waste, and you might want to find ways to stop this.

Please never use products like bungee cords. These can get caught in the bin lift on the lorry. That’s very dangerous, and we won’t collect bins with bungee cords or other similar items, particularly anything that would stretch.

For a simple solution it’s always best remove bins as soon as possible after they’ve been emptied to stop them blowing about.

These are all simple, free ways you can help:

  • Put your bin out as close to collection as you can, on the day of collection rather than overnight, if you’re able to do that.
  • Use a large stone or brick and leave it on top of your wheelie bin lid to keep the waste secure.
  • Secure the lid with strong tape such as a piece of gaffer tape or electrical tape.

In Edinburgh, we’ve bought many different bins, so they’re not all the same.

We’re looking to make it easier for you to find products that are safe to use, but you can buy these ones direct from the sellers.

Most bins have handles in each front corner, so we suggest the following products:

If your bin doesn’t have handles in each front corner, but just a raised lip along the front, we suggest the Oasis Bin Lock.
