Decisions on school places

  1. Places in catchment schools (selected)
  2. Schools with available places in P1 or S1

Places in catchment schools

All catchment children who were registered by 28 February 2017 are guaranteed a place in one of their catchment schools. Children who are baptised in the Roman Catholic faith are also guaranteed a place in their catchment Roman Catholic school.

You will receive a letter confirming your place if you registered at one of our oversubscribed Roman Catholic primary schools, else schools will contact parents to confirm places and arrange induction.

Oversubscribed Roman Catholic schools

Due to the high volume of children that applied for a place within their catchment area we have given priority to baptised Roman Catholic children who provided evidence that they were baptised by 28 February 2017.

If your child

  • is not baptised in the Roman Catholic faith
  • was registered at one of the affected schools by 28 February 2017

we sent you a letter on 10 March 2017 to advise of the outcome whether the place has been granted or turned down.

The schools affected are

  • Holy Cross
  • St Catherine's
  • St Cuthbert's
  • St David's
  • St John's
  • St Joseph's
  • St Mary's (Edinburgh)
  • St Mary's (Leith)
  • St Peter's
  • Holy Rood High School

St Andrew's Fox Covert, St Francis', St John Vianney, St Mark's and St Ninian's have now admitted all catchment children from the waiting list.

Late registration in catchment schools

Where possible we reserve places for incoming catchment children, however a number of schools are already full.

If we cannot offer you a place in your catchment school we will place your child on the waiting list ahead of non-catchment children. The majority of children will receive places before the end of term in June 2017. However, if by then we are still unable to offer a place, we will send you a letter formally turning down your request.

Non-catchment placing requests

We make decisions on non-catchment placing requests depending on the date received.

If we received your placing request

  • by 24 December 2016 we sent you a letter on 10 March 2017
  • from 25 December 2016 to 15 March 2017 we sent you a letter on 13 April 2017
  • from 16 March up to the end of April 2017, including second preference requests, we sent you a letter on 11 May 2017
  • after the end of April 2017 you will receive a letter at a later date.
