Meadows to George Street - Streets for People

Meadows and George Street Active Travel logo

The Meadows to George Street project aims to transform the quality of walking, cycling, accessibility for all and public spaces on some of Edinburgh's busiest streets:

  • Hanover Street
  • the Mound
  • Bank Street
  • George IV Bridge
  • Forrest Road
  • Bristo Place
  • Teviot Place

These streets, which link the Meadows to George Street, play an important role in the lives of the many who use them for work, leisure and for everyday journeys.

The project will build upon the Council's Active Travel Action plan, the emerging City Centre Transformation Project and integrates with the George Street and First New Town project at Hanover Street. Meadows to George Street is one of the winners of Sustrans Scotland's 2017 Community Links PLUS design competition funded by the Scottish Government.

The first stage of the project ran from June 2018 to September 2018. During this stage, we listened to the views of people who use and have an interest in these streets.

Engagement to date

Our first stage of public engagement ran during June and July 2018 and included

  • online Placecheck tool asking people what they like, don't like or would like improved along the route which attracted over 300 comments
  • on-street events, Clean Air Day, on 21 July and 21 August which saw us speaking to over 100 people and sharing information with hundreds more
  • a snapshot visitor survey on Hanover Street, The Mound and George IV Bridge, speaking to over 50 visitors to the city
  • on-route gathering of information from businesses and a business drop-in discussion session in September
  • a stakeholder organisation workshop in September
  • a community representative drop-in discussion session in September

Findings so far

Some of the key messages provided from the engagement events described above are as follows

  • wider pavements requested to cope with the volumes of pedestrians
  • better and safer pedestrian crossing opportunities
  • cycling provision that is separate from motor traffic and pedestrians
  • rationalise/ remove street clutter which can cause issues during busy periods
  • access for all must guide the project proposals
  • visitors observed how busy the streets were, particularly with road traffic

The engagement summary provides a more details of what you have told us so far. A supporting map also gives an overview of the comments we heard from people who use the route.
