Nationality checking service and citizenship ceremonies

Help applying for British Citizenship and other services available

The Nationality Document Return Service (NDRS) available from the 30 January 2018 allows those applying online, to become a British Citizen, the opportunity to retain their original supporting documents while their application is being processed. As a participating local authority we will photocopy and stamp your supporting documents and send them Royal Mail Special Delivery to UKVI. This is for AN and MN1 applications only.

This service is by appointment only and must be within 10 days of submitting your online application. To make an appointment please phone

The fee for this service is £54 VAT included which is payable at time of booking. This fee is not refundable or transferable. You will also be charged the appropriate postage for the weight of your application.

Joint Citizen and Passport Application service

The Joint Citizen and Passport Application (JCAP) service is available from the 30 January 2018. You are now able to apply for your first British Passport at the same time as your citizenship application. This easy, efficient service has been developed in partnership with the UKVI. If your citizenship application is successful and you attend a ceremony, your new passport will be dispatched to your home.

We can only accept passport applications as part of a joint application for citizenship. To use this service complete a standard British Passport application form available from the Post Office and bring it with you to your NDRS appointment.

The fee for this service is £24 VAT included this fee is in addition to the fee charged for NDRS.

European Passport Return Service 

The European Passport Return Service (EPRS) is provided for EEA and Swiss Nationals who are applying online using the EEA (QP) or EEA (PR) application forms.

As a participating local authority we can photocopy your EEA or Swiss passport and forward the photocopied passport along with original supporting documents to UKVI on your behalf.  Your passport is then available for you to use while your application is being processed.

This service is by appointment only and you must attend your appointment within 5 days of submitting your online application. To make an appointment please phone

Nationality Checking service 

Our officers are authorised to check and forward completed citizenship applications to the Home Office. We will review and photocopy all the relevant documentation that requires to be sent to support your application.

However, the Council's Nationality Checking service cannot provide advice on nationality matters. If you require any advice on nationality applications please refer to the UK Border Agency or by phoning the nationality group helpline on

0300 123 2253.

We operate appointments from Tuesday to Thursday at the City Chambers.

Citizenship ceremonies

If your application for British Citizenship is successful you will receive a letter from the Home Office inviting you to attend a citizenship ceremony. They are conducted within the City Chambers and are held every two weeks, normally on a Tuesday.

In conjunction with Home Office guidelines you will be expected to attend your ceremony within three months of receiving Citizenship.

Documents

When you attend your ceremony you will need to bring the letter of invitation from the Home Office and photographic ID.

You can also invite two guests to come along with you. You will be asked if you wish to make the Oath or the Affirmation of allegiance at the ceremony.

On the day

Please arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony to allow you to go through security at City Chambers Reception.

Your invite and photo ID will then be checked by a member of staff and they will explain the procedure of the ceremony. You will be shown into the ceremony room along with the other new citizens. During the ceremony each new citizen will swear or affirm an Oath of Allegiance to the Crown and to uphold the values and laws of the UK.

Your certificate will be presented to you and a photograph taken at the time should you agree.

The ceremony is concluded by the playing of the National Anthem of the UK.

You will be invited to join us in some light refreshments and this also gives family and friends time to take some personal photographs.

We can also conduct an individual ceremony however, this will incur an extra cost of £105.
