Communal bins

We have over 13,000 communal bins in Edinburgh for waste and recycling. They are used in tenement and flatted areas.

How to use the bins

The bins are for household waste and recycling only. You should not use them to get rid of waste or recycling from a business.

Bag waste that can't be recycled. Please use small bags if possible as this means the bin can hold more.

When you put items into the paper or dry mixed recycling bins they should be put in loose. We don't accept plastic bags for recycling.

Find what goes in each bin and what can be recycled in the communal recycling bins

Electrical items, DIY waste, furniture like mattresses should not be put in the bins or left beside them. Please dispose of these items responsibly by booking a special uplift or taking them to a Community Recycling Centre

Furniture in good condition can be reused, please call the National Re use phone line on

0800 0665 820

who will arrange to collect it for free.

If the bins are full please use the next available bin and don't leave waste beside the bins. Dumping waste and furniture beside the bins is illegal and you can be fined £200. You can report overflowing bins online by following the link below.

Use the communal bin map to find communal recycling and landfill bins in your area.
